What is the minimum amount of Mahr and the rulings regarding its payment?

1. Mahr is a right of the wife that becomes obligatory upon the husband by virtue of the Nikah. 2. The minimum amount of Mahr is ten (10) Dirhams. According to the measurements used in the book, this is equivalent to approximately 30.6 grams (3 tolas and 1.5 mashas) of silver or its value. 3. If a Mahr less than this is fixed, the husband will still be required to pay the full 10 Dirhams. 4. There is no maximum limit for Mahr, and it can be fixed at any amount the husband can afford. 5. If the Nikah is performed without mentioning a Mahr, the Nikah is still valid, but the husband must pay 'Mahr al-Mithl' (the dowry typically given to women of the wife's paternal family). 6. If the marriage is consummated or if 'Khalwat-e-Sahihah' (seclusion) occurs, the full Mahr becomes due.
