How to Perform the Janazah (Funeral) Prayer
Quick Overview
Salat al-Janazah is the Islamic funeral prayer. It is performed in congregation standing up, without any bowing (Ruku) or prostration (Sujud).
The 2 Fard (Obligatory) Acts
If any of these are missed, the Perform is invalid.
- •Saying the four Takbeers (Allahu Akbar).
- •Performing the prayer while standing (Qiyam).
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1Intention & First Takbeer (FARD)
Fard (Obligatory)Stand in rows behind the Imam. Make intention for the Janazah prayer. The Imam says 'Allahu Akbar' aloud. Raise your hands, fold them, and silently recite Surah Al-Fatihah (or Sana in the Hanafi school).
Standing and saying the Takbeers are the only Fard pillars of this prayer.
Step 2Second Takbeer & Durood
Fard (Obligatory)The Imam says the second 'Allahu Akbar'. You do not raise your hands. Silently recite the Durood (Salawat) exactly as you do in the final sitting of regular Salah.
The second Takbeer is a Fard requirement.
Step 3Third Takbeer & Dua for the Deceased
Fard (Obligatory)The Imam says the third 'Allahu Akbar'. Silently recite the specific Dua for the deceased. (e.g., 'O Allah, forgive our living and our dead...')
The third Takbeer is a Fard requirement.
Step 4Fourth Takbeer & Salam
Fard (Obligatory)The Imam says the fourth 'Allahu Akbar'. Pause briefly, then the Imam will say the Salam to the right and left to end the prayer. Follow the Imam in the Salam.
The final Takbeer is a Fard requirement.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ✕Attempting to bow (Ruku) or prostrate (Sujud) out of habit (Janazah has neither).
- ✕Talking during the prayer or while the body is being brought in.
- ✕Arriving late and not knowing how to make up the missed Takbeers.
