How to Perform Ghusl (Full Ablution) Step by Step

Quick Overview

Ghusl is the full-body ritual purification required after certain states of major impurity (Janabah, menstruation, postpartum bleeding).

10-15 Minutes 3 Fard Acts

The 3 Fard (Obligatory) Acts

If any of these are missed, the Perform is invalid.

  • •Rinsing the mouth thoroughly (Gargling).
  • •Sniffing water deep into the nose.
  • •Washing the entire body so that not a single hair or spot of skin remains dry.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1Intention (Niyyah)

Make the intention in your heart to perform Ghusl to purify yourself from major impurity. Say 'Bismillah' before entering the bathroom.

Step 2Wash Hands & Private Parts

Wash your hands three times. Then, wash your private parts thoroughly to remove any physical impurity (Najassah) from your body.

Step 3Perform Complete Wudu

Perform a complete Wudu (exactly as you do for prayer). You may delay washing your feet until the very end of the Ghusl.

Step 4Rinse Mouth Thoroughly (FARD)

Fard (Obligatory)

Take water into your mouth and gargle it thoroughly so it reaches the back of the throat. (Do not gargle vigorously if fasting). This is a Fard requirement.

Rinsing the mouth thoroughly is 1 of the 3 Fard of Ghusl.

Step 5Sniff Water into Nose (FARD)

Fard (Obligatory)

Sniff water deep into your nostrils until you feel it reach the soft bone, then blow it out. This is a Fard requirement.

Sniffing water deep into the nose is 1 of the 3 Fard of Ghusl.

Step 6Pour Water Over the Head

Pour water over your head 3 times, rubbing the hair to ensure water reaches the roots and the scalp.

Step 7Wash Entire Right Side, Then Left

Pour water over the entire right side of your body, then the left side, rubbing the skin to ensure the water reaches everywhere.

Step 8Ensure Entire Body is Wet (FARD)

Fard (Obligatory)

Ensure that absolutely no part of your body is left dry. Pay attention to the armpits, navel, and between the toes. Wetting the entire body is Fard.

Ensuring not a single dry spot remains on the entire body is the final Fard of Ghusl.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • ✕Failing to gargle water into the throat or sniff it high into the nose.
  • ✕Leaving dry spots on the back, underarms, or between the toes.
  • ✕Women with braided hair failing to ensure water reaches the roots of the scalp.
  • ✕Reciting Quranic ayahs aloud while in a state of major impurity before the Ghusl is complete.

Scriptural Basis

Hadith Context

"Aisha (RA) reported that when the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) performed Ghusl from Janabah, he would start by washing his hands, then perform Wudu as he would for prayer, then pour water over his head three times, then pour water over the rest of his body. (Sahih Muslim)"
