As Dhul Hijjah approaches, Muslims worldwide prepare for the sacred act of Qurbani (also known as Udhiyah). This profound tradition honors the devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and serves as a vital means of providing food to the less fortunate.
However, many people are confused about who exactly is obligated to perform Qurbani, how animal shares work, and the proper Islamic method for distributing the meat. This comprehensive guide covers all the essential rules for 2026.
Who is Obligated to Perform Qurbani?
According to the Hanafi school of thought, Qurbani is Wajib (mandatory) for every sane, adult Muslim who possesses wealth equal to or greater than the Nisab threshold during the days of Eid al-Adha (10th, 11th, and 12th of Dhul Hijjah).
The Nisab for Qurbani is exactly the same as the Nisab for Zakat (the value of 612.36 grams of silver). The key difference is that for Qurbani, the wealth does not need to have been in your possession for a full lunar year (Hawl). If you have the wealth on the days of Eid, the Qurbani is due.
In other schools of thought (Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali), Qurbani is considered a highly recommended Sunnah Mu'akkadah.
Understanding Qurbani Animals and Shares
Not all animals are equal when it comes to fulfilling your Qurbani. The type of animal you choose dictates how many people it can cover (shares) and the age requirement of the animal.
1. Small Animals (Sheep and Goats)
- Shares: 1 Share (Covers 1 eligible person)
- Age Requirement: Must be at least 1 year old. (A sheep that is over 6 months old but looks big enough to be a year old is permissible).
2. Large Animals (Cows, Bulls, Buffaloes, Camels)
- Shares: Up to 7 Shares (Can cover up to 7 eligible people)
- Age Requirement for Cattle: Must be at least 2 years old.
- Age Requirement for Camels: Must be at least 5 years old.
If a family of five all meet the wealth criteria for Qurbani, they can either sacrifice five separate goats, or they can purchase five shares in a single cow (with two shares left over, which can be given as optional charity or purchased by someone else).

The 1/3 Rule: How to Distribute Qurbani Meat
The Sunnah method of distributing Qurbani meat is to divide it into three equal parts:
- One Third for the Poor: This must be given to people in need, locally or globally.
- One Third for Friends and Family: Shared with relatives, neighbors, and friends (regardless of their financial status).
- One Third for Yourself: Kept for your own household to eat and enjoy.
Note: If you are performing your Qurbani abroad through a charity, they will typically distribute 100% of the meat to those in desperate need, which is highly encouraged and entirely permissible.
Calculating the Cost of Qurbani in 2026
The price of Qurbani varies wildly depending on whether you sacrifice locally or donate your share to a developing country through an NGO.
- Local Qurbani (USA/UK/Europe): A whole sheep or goat can cost anywhere from $250 to $450+.
- Global Qurbani (Africa/Asia): Donating a share abroad can cost as little as $50 to $100, allowing you to feed families in extreme poverty.
If you have a large family, calculating the total shares required and finding the most cost-effective distribution method can be tricky.
Our Qurbani Calculator allows you to input your family members, choose between local or global sacrifice options, and instantly see the total number of shares required and the estimated cost.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a husband and wife share one Qurbani? If both the husband and wife possess wealth above the Nisab threshold, they must each offer their own Qurbani. They cannot "share" a single goat. They would need two goats or two shares in a cow.
Can I give money instead of performing Qurbani? No. The act of shedding blood (the sacrifice itself) is the core essence of this worship. Giving the equivalent amount of money to charity does not fulfill the obligation of Qurbani.
What if I miss my Qurbani? If the days of Eid pass and you did not perform your obligatory Qurbani, you must calculate the monetary value of a sheep/goat and give that exact amount to the poor as Sadaqah, seeking forgiveness for the delay.
